Bloody Sunday
Marxism was the ideology that poor and middle class Russians followed. Karl Marx said "The people will demand a dictatorship by the entire Proletariat, not by one man." The Marxists organized protests to show the Czar they wanted reforms. The 1905 protest took place at the Czar's Palace. The protesters' demands were to have better working conditions, electricity in their homes, reduce work days to 8 hours, stop the war with Japan over Korea to stop the heavy losses of land and soldiers, and have the right to vote. When the palace guards couldn't get the protesters to leave, Bloody Sunday took place. On January 22, 1905, 3,000 unarmed workers carried Christian crosses and a petition to the Czar. The Czar's guards shot a bullet into the air but the protesters wouldn't leave, so they shot the crowd. Over 300 people were killed and 1,000 were wounded.
