The November Revolution and Civil War
The motives and actions of the Bolsheviks during the November 1917 Revolution were violent. The Bolsheviks were Russians who believed in the Marxist government. They changed their name from Marxist to Communist Party. The leaders of the Bolsheviks were Josef Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, and Leon Trotsky. Armed factory workers who were also called the Bolshevik Red Guard started the 1917 March Revolution. The Red guard arrested the provisional leaders and the Czar and his family. In 1918, the Red Guard killed the Czar, his wife, and 5 children. After the Czar was executed, a civil war broke out from 1918 to 1921.
The White Army were wealthy Russians who wanted a czar and wanted to punish the Bolsheviks for the murder of the royal family. The Red Army were the Bolsheviks. Leon Trotsky was key general for the Red Army during the civil war. The U.S., Britain, and France sent soldiers to help the White Army because they wanted capitalism in Russia to sell them products. The results of the civil war ended with 14 million Russians killed and the Bolsheviks maintaining power. In 1922, Bolshevik Russia becomes the Soviet Union or USSR (Union of Soviet socialist Republic)
